About Us
The English Speaking Union (‘ESU’) is an independent, non-political, educational charity with members throughout the world and branches in 50 countries. Its purpose is to promote international understanding and human achievement through the widening use of the English Language. For millions of people throughout the world, proficiency in English is a key factor in personal and professional achievements. In this global environment, the English Language plays a pivotal role in promoting and fostering international cooperation, understanding and friendship.
The ESU’s response to globalisation is to work through people-to-people exchanges, scholarships, speaking and music competitions, conferences, training courses at national and international level made possible through the generosity of its members and sponsors worldwide.
ESU Malaysia was founded in 2000 and has grown steadily, both in membership and in the number of programmes offered to members. One of the main events is the Annual Public Speaking Competition. Essay Writing Competition is also another feature. Workshops which feature lectures on various topics as well as interactive language exercises, take place at least quarterly. Programmes to increase exposure to the English language through the donation of books and computer interchanges are also implemented.
A continuing challenge for the ESU Malaysia is to provide thought provoking, enabling and informative programs to encourage new members and sustain current membership. Our aim is to promote goodwill and foster understanding amongst the peoples of all ethnicities in Malaysia and throughout the world.
ESU Malaysia is proud of its growing membership and its contribution to international understanding and the enhancement of the usage of the English language.
