Public Speaking Competition

Public Speaking Competition - Year 2003/4

Internationally, the Public Speaking competition was conceived by the ESU’s Centre for Speech and Debate in Dartmouth to further the use of the language through the medium of public speaking and debating amongst students and young adults. The competition began in 1981 with speakers from 3 countries. Last year, 32 countries took part in the competition with South African Palesa Mohapi emerging as the Overall Winner and Audience’s Choice.

In its first venture to the International Competition in 2003, Malaysia entered two finalists, including Ms. Jean Lee. Ms. Jean Lee did Malaysia proud. She was the only Asian representative amongst the eight finalists in the penultimate heat.

In 2004, the hunt for national champions began with workshops in three states: Selangor ( Klang Valley), Penang and Johor (Johor Baru). Over 350 students attended the workshops, all eager to participate in the rigours of the preliminary competitions.

Preliminary competitions were held in Johor Baru, Penang and Petaling Jaya in March and April 2004 and saw participation from over 150 students. Competition was stiff and entrants came from schools, colleges and universities across the Peninsular. After much deliberation, twelve National Finalists were chosen.
